There is no future without a past. It doesn’t determine the future, but it gives it a start…a foundation and something on which to build.

At Five Star Bank, we’re building on strength. Our roots go back to the 1850’s when Wolcott Humphrey — great grandfather of current President and CEO, Peter Humphrey—started with a community bank in Wyoming County, the Wyoming County Bank. Mr. Humphrey’s plan for success was to focus on two things: the customers and the communities in which they lived. He never lost that focus. And his success is legendary.

The bank he formed would one day become the flagship bank of what is today’s Five Star Bank. However, that flagship would have three sister banks, each with its own rich history in banking.

A few years prior to the formation of Wyoming County Bank - in March of 1817 - another bank just east of Wyoming County Bank was chartered as The Bank of Geneva. It would eventually become The National Bank of Geneva, a name it assumed in 1923, after over 100 years of service. In 1997, The National Bank of Geneva celebrated its 180th anniversary.

In subsequent years, another bank was founded. In 1881, the Salamanca Trust Company was founded in the city of Salamanca, the only U.S. city to be located on a Native American Indian Reservation. This small bank would exist virtually unchanged for 96 years until its second branch in Ellicottville was added. Salamanca Trust Company was acquired in 1989. It eventually became First Tier Bank & Trust.

Finally, in 1912, Bath National Bank was founded to serve the central Finger Lakes area. This bank would grow to host 13 branches across the region. Bath National Bank was acquired in 2001.

In 1931, a bank holding company, Financial Institutions, Inc., was formed to manage the banks and to help assure its succession through the Great Depression. But the ideals of these banks and the holding company remained the same: serve the needs of customers and the community. Success will follow.

Both the ideal and the commitment were well received…and the
company prospered. For over a century and a half, we have satisfied customers by meeting their needs for new products, providing the latest in financial services and contributing to their communities.

We have earned a reputation for fairness, integrity and for being “community minded”. And with the dedication of excellent people, we have built a company with solid equity. Our heritage is one of strength.

Today, the company is not only reshaped and renamed, it is Five Star Bank. Under the direction of fourth-generation Humphrey Family member, Peter Humphrey, Five Star Bank is guided by Wolcott Humphrey’s original vision of a community-focused bank…only better!

Now, the bank boasts $2.0 billion in assets and does business in 14 contiguous counties in Western and Central New York. We offer our customers the service and convenience of a network of more than 50 branches and over 70 ATMs.

We are a progressive, energized and streamlined bank. But we are also one which takes immense pride in our people, our communities and our heritage.
